The Amazing Snakeheads | Friday 2 May | The Roadhouse

Signed to Domino Records, Glasgow’s The Amazing Snakeheads came out of nowhere with their now sold-out debut 7″ single Testifying Time last summer. Since then, they’ve gone on to be renowned as one of the most brutal and brilliant live bands around – with The Guardian journalist commenting in his review of their recent show for Other Voices festival that they were “a band so exciting I couldn’t sleep”. Their debut album, Amphetamine Ballads, is due out this April, and is already being talked up as one of the most visceral and vital LPs of the year.

The Amazing Snakeheads – Here It Comes Again on YouTube

Despite the savage and uncompromising nature of their early releases (with comparisons being drawn to The Vipers at their most snarling) and sums that their first single is now passing hands for, it is their live shows that have drawn most acclaim. Barry Nicholson – also of The Guardian – perhaps captured it best in his review of a recent Glasgow show, noting the bands “white-hot intensity and evangelical zeal… Dale Barclay prowls the stage like a disturbed zoo animal, veins bulging from his temples and his lower jaw locked in a permanent rave-casualty grimace… a snarling, malicious thrash delivered with a sociopathic twinkle in the eye.”

Tickets are £5 advance and are available through SeeTickets.

Evian Christ + Koreless + more | RNCM | Saturday 29 March

Since the release of his breakthrough mixtape Kings And Them on Tri Angle Records in February 2012, Evian Christ has performed to critical acclaim around the world alongside musical collaborators including Purity Ring, Actress and Four Tet, as well as producing I’m In It on Kanye West’s Yeezus. While recognised internationally for his unique flavour of hip-hop influenced fluid house music, Evian Christ’s recent Duga-3 release demonstrated a darker, more minimal and introspective style, an approach also seen during his recent sound art installation with Matthew Barney.

This theatre performance will see Evian Christ present his work live for the first time in a more formal concert setting, alongside a lineup of specially invited international guests and collaborators, performing a blend of brand new and existing work:

Koreless is the project of Welsh producer Lewis Roberts. Born and raised in Bangor, one of the smallest cities in the UK, Roberts relocated to Glasgow aged 18 spending four years studying naval architecture.Taking his studies beyond the classroom, he spent his summer holidays ship building while honing a hidden craft, his music.

Young Turks had their introduction back in 2010, via Jamie xx, to the track ‘Up Down Up Down’, and invited Koreless on his first trip to London, to play their series at The Alibi, alongside contemporaries Bullion, Pariah, Sampha and Kwes. Only two releases have emerged since then, ’4D/MTI’ in 2011 and ‘Lost in Tokyo’ in 2012, as well as his collaborative ‘Short Stories’ with Sampha in January 2013. Remarkable in his restraint, his music stands out for it’s sophistication despite it’s simplicity.

Koreless – Sun on YouTube

Head of respected experimental label Presto!?, Lorenzo Senni’s work deconstructs the sound of 90’s rave culture, carefully analyzing its constituent parts for reuse in a very different context, with repetition and isolation as key concepts. His music often begins with one simple idea or musical pattern, forcing it into a sonic spiral of repetitive and percussive arpeggiated melodies. His work explores the idea of the “buildup” found in euphoric dance music as a starting point to make a non-uplifting, more introspective piece that implicitly preserves its emotional tension and drama.

South London based producer Visionist rose to prominence in 2011 with his breakthrough track ‘Come In’ after support from DJ Oneman. Visionist’s use of choral melodies have become a big feature in his recent music, drawing on sensations of empathy and intimacy, and his sound has gained big admirers in the likes of Benji B, Kode 9 & Zomby.

T C F is the moniker of Norwegian contemporary artist and experimental computer musician Lars Holdhus. His work explores themes of code, cryptography and privacy through the use of visual, sonic, built and written concepts. Often the titles and descriptions of his work are written in cyphertext, the key to which is hidden within the piece itself. His forthcoming release on Liberation Technologies will further this cryptographic theme, consisting of digital and physical content containing the necessary keys to unlock the full meaning of the work.

Factory Floor | Islington Mill | Saturday 3 May

Formed in 2005, Factory Floor have become renowned for their sound which – even after almost a decade – remains almost completely unique. Built around the cold heart of drum machines, synth and loops, the band spent much of their early years releasing a steady slew of singles, EPs and remixes that have only increased their renown. Often labelled as ‘post-industrial’, anyone who has ever experienced one of their staggeringly brutal live shows isn’t like to forget it – and this special, late night show at Islington Mill is likely to top it all.

Daniel Avery – Drone Logic (Factory Floor remix) on Soundcloud

Reviews for their debut proved that the LP was more than worth the wait – Time Out awarded four stars, calling it “captivating from start to finish, visceral in the extreme”, sentiments backed up by The 405 (“Factory Floor have created one of the best albums of the year”, 9/10), Loud & Quiet (“the watchwords here are pristine cleanliness and a towering, stainless steel confidence”, 8/10) and Mojo (“blurs the lines between human and machine and back again… very hard to argue with”, 4/5).

Tickets are £10 advance and are available through SeeTickets.
