Having played together in various different iterations during college, Dutch Uncles got together in their current form in around 2008, quickly earning the attention of German label Tapete. Following the release of their eponymous debut LP through the imprint, the 5 piece have since teamed up with Memphis Industries and gone about earning a name for themselves as one of the most interesting, innovative and esoteric acts around. Known for their willingness to use atypical time signatures and experimental song structure, their idiosyncratic art pop has earned them enormous critical acclaim through their albums Cadenza and Out Of Touch In The Wild.

In 2015, Dutch Uncles will return with their 4th album, O Shudder. Recorded in both Wales and Salford with long-time collaborator Brendan Williams and featuring a cameo from Stealing Sheep, singer Duncan Wallis has described the record as exploring the themes of and reflecting upon “terrorism, school discos, divorce, health scares, sexual dysfunction and jobseeking”. In fitting with their new expansive approach, this show will be the band’s largest ever headline show.

The working name of Steven Ellison, Flying Lotus is a project that has spent the best part of the last 10 years being quietly prolific and wildly brilliant. Releasing his first LP 1983 back in 2006, Fly Lo has since put out further seminal works Los Angeles, Cosmogramma and Until The Quiet Comes, as well as finding time to put out an album under his rap alter-ego Captain Murphy. Each release has further enhanced the view of Ellison as a singular, visionary artist, constant pushing and redefining his own boundaries – something cemented even further with the release of his 5th Fly Lo record earlier this year, You’re Dead.

Featuring collaborations with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Herbie Hancock, the album has been his most critical and commercially successful to date. The Guardian awarded the LP a perfect score – a rarity for the newspaper – and noted that “as each song merges into the next, as one style succeeds another, the sensation is that of being in a dream”. Drowned in Sound agreed, stating “Flying Lotus has added a new realm to his universe, answering one of life’s biggest questions in the process” and giving You’re Dead 9/10 in the process – something that has been backed up by the likes of The Observer (10/10), Pitchfork (8.3/10) and Best Fit (8.5/10) among many others.

Following the almost instant sell-out of their forthcoming Deaf Institute show, Now Wave are proud to announce a December date for The Wytches.
After spending the majority of their teens flitting in and out of various bands, The Wytches got together in 2011 through an advert on the Brighton university campus. Since then, they’ve become one of the most important up and coming bands in the UK, putting out their debut single through Hate Hate Records in 2012. Entitled Beehive Queen, it quickly sold out, as did subsequent releases Robe for Juda and Crying Clown – something which caught the attention of Heavenly Records, who signed them up for their debut LP, Annabel Dream Reader.

Produced with Bill Ryder-Jones (formerly of The Coral), Annabel Dream Reader is the culmination of everything the band have learnt through their tender years. Mixing psyche with their own intimate textures and lyrical clout, it channels intensity of their famed live performances, with Pasta Magazine noting “Anyone weaned on the fizzy punk abandon of Bleach-era Nirvana–that holy union of feedback-dappled punk on metal–will identify almost rapturously with The Wytches” (9.1/10).

Cutting his teeth in the late 1990s with cult Boston band The Recoys – who sadly never got around to releasing a proper full-length LP, despite a slew of much vaunted EPs – Hamilton Leithauser shot to international acclaim as the vocalist and one of the main creative forces behind The Walkmen. Creating some of the most iconic albums (including Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone and Bows + Arrows) and songs (most notably, The Rat and Little House of Savages) of the 2000s, the band have since gone on hiatus, with Leithauser forging his own career as a solo artist.

Put out earlier this year through Ribbon Music, debut album Black Hours builds on many of the themes hinted at through Hamilton’s lengthy career. Featuring collaborations with artists such as Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend), Amber Coffman (Dirty Projectors), Richard Swift (The Shins), Morgan Henderson (Fleet Foxes) and Paul Maroon (The Walkmen), The AV Club called it “a lively, confident, and charming first effort” (8.3/10), with MOJO adding “[Leithauser] revels in letting his talent run free” (8/10).

Formed from the wreckage of their past band The Silly Kissers, TOPS have spent the last 4 or so years quietly creating some of the most affecting and brilliant music from their base in Quebec. Quickly signed to the massively influential Arbutus Records imprint, the quartet put out their debut LP Tender Opposites to huge acclaim – BBC Music said of the album that “[it is] a subtle magic TOPS weave here, and like all the best records, Tender Opposites rewards repeated spins”. Gorilla vs Bear went one further in placing it 8th in the albums of the year list, with Tender Opposites being a staple of 2011’s end of year polls.

The band took their time in crafting their follow-up record, both distilling and expanding their sound on Picture You Staring. Released this September, most critics seem to agree that the band have built upon their already sturdy base. DIY were perhaps the most effusive in their praise, stating “TOPS are a rare band that have an covalent bonding chemistry with one another, and the results are a bright, sparkling album that continues their legacy” (8/10). This sentiment was backed up by the likes of Best Fit (8.5/10), CMJ (8/10) and All Music Guide (8/10).
