Kurt Vile close to selling out | The Ritz | Wednesday 18 November

Tickets are now running extremely low for the forthcoming Kurt Vile show at The Ritz. Those looking to attend are advised to book beforehand or risk disappointment.

Tickets can be purchased through See Tickets for £15 here.

Bewitched by lo-fi figureheads like Beck, Pavement, and Smog, along with a love for classics like Petty, Creedence, and Neil Young, Kurt Vile recorded his first songs and self-distributed them on CD-R between 2003 and 2007. Since then, he’s become one of the world’s most revered cult artists, with his latest LP – b’lieve i’m goin down… perhaps being his finest work to date with opener Pretty Pimpin arguably being his most finely honed pop song to date.

Support for this show now comes from Lushes, who Stereogum described as “a band that screws with that expectation as much as they embrace it, though. Every time they seem like they might break into an abrupt noise attack, they cut to a gentle moment of beauty, or add a flourish of synths.”

Ghostpoet added to Alt-J + Horrors show | Manchester Central | Sunday 29 November

Already one of the most exciting bills of the year, we’re proud to announce that Al-J and The Horrors will be joined at their Manchester Central show by Ghostpoet.

Ghostpoet – Off Peak Dreams on YouTube

The working name of Obaro Emijiwe, Ghostpoet came to the fore with his astonishing debut LP. Working under his now famous Ghostpoet moniker, Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam was released through the mega influential Brownswood label, and quickly became regarded as one of the most affecting, heartfelt and important records of the decade so far. Nominated for the 2011 Mercury Prize, the self-produced LP gave a platform for Obaro’s unique voice and unparalleled ability for storytelling.

Ghostpoet – Cash & Carry Me Home on YouTube

Having sat on the panel for the 2014 edition, this year Ghostpoet has once again been nominated for the Mercury Award for his latest LP, Shedding Skin – a record accurately summed up by Mojo as “anthems of vague disquiet, and an utterly satisfying sense of an artist following his own directs and nobody else’s”.

Tickets are £29 and are available now.

Youth Lagoon | 3 February @ Band On The Wall | 4 February @ Belgrave Music Hall, Leeds

Few careers have taken off as quickly as that of Trevor Powers. Starting working under the name Youth Lagoon in 2010, Powers signed to Fat Possum to put out his debut LP, The Year of Hibernation. A record of devastating simplicity and breathtaking beauty, it seemed to become an instant classic – Pitchfork summed up the feelings that many instantly had towards the album in their 8.4/10 review, noting “The record mixes feelings of protection and safety with the tug of adventure and wraps it in compulsively listenable music that explodes at just the right moments.” Written and recorded at a time where Powers was receiving treatment for anxiety, it went on to feature on the end of year lists of Pitchfork, Pretty Much Amazing and a number of other outlets.

Follow-up Wondrous Bughouse showcase a style that seemed to match Powers’ own emotional development – more experimental, slightly more extroverted and definitely more sophisticated. In their 9/10 review Best Fit called it “a delicious collage: provocative, allusive and consistently engaging”, while DIY said “it’s evident this record took Powers to places he wishes he’d never been. Darkness has never sounded so gloriously technicolor” and awarded 8/10.

This year, Youth Lagoon has once again returned and furthered that maturity with Savage Hills Ballroom, and album that Powers has said deals with acknowledging personal flaws and breaking down barriers. Earning some of the best reviews of his career so far, All Music (8/10) wrote that “[the album] expanded the Youth Lagoon sound without losing any of the intimacy of his bedroom pop beginnings” while Uncut (8/10) praised the LP’s “Lush, lightly electronic chamber-pop arrangements”.

Grimes | Academy | Saturday 12 March

Three years after the release of her iconic breakthrough LP Visions, Clare Boucher – better known as Grimes – is back. A creative polyglot, Boucher had long been a darling of the underground scene with her two early releases, Geidi Primes and Halifaxa, but Boucher is now a bonafide international star, counting Jay-Z, Beyonce and Rihanna among her many fans.

Grimes – Oblivion on YouTube

Raised in Vancouver, it was a move to Montreal for university that gave birth to the Grimes project. Embedding herself in the singularly eclectic scene in the area (which has also given rise to Blue Hawaii, Majical Clouds and Purity Ring), Boucher claims that a realisation at the age of 20 helped her become a musician – she told The Guardian, “One day, I was listening to music and it suddenly made sense to me how it was constructed”. Her cited influences mirror this typically unique upbringing and approach to songcraft, with K-Pop, Enya, Drake, Aphex Twin and Dizzee Rascal being among the many picked out by Boucher as having shaped and tinged her sound.

Among the swathes of gushing reviews for Visions, it was perhaps Pitchfork who put it best in their 8.5/10 review that “Anchored to the digital imagination but unbridled from its skittish anxiety and concerns,Visions gestures skyward and beyond”. As well as featuring on countless end of year lists, single Oblivion was named as the best track of the decade so far by Pitchfork and as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time by NME. Her new album is expected shortly.
